In January 2008, the First Minister and deputy First Minister of the Northern Ireland Executive appointed Mike as a Commissioner for the Victims & Survivors of the conflict in Northern Ireland. A former international athlete, Mike began his broadcasting career with BBC Northern Ireland, covering FIFA World Cups in Spain and Mexico, and Commonwealth Games in Brisbane and Edinburgh, before switching to news and current affairs in 1986.

Over the next 20 years, he anchored coverage of just about every major event in the unfolding Troubles and peace/political process - from Enniskillen through the Shankill bomb and Greysteel shootings to Omagh; and on to the visit of President Clinton and the setting up of the devolved Assembly.

More recently, Mike has offered media training, public relations and public affairs consultancy, as well as after-dinner speaking.
