Ma

Ma grew up on the Falls Road. Well, she really grew sideways as she is well known as the small - or vertically challenged - matriarch of Northern Ireland's most dysfunctional family.

However, do not let her height - or rather the lack of it - deceive you. Ma is a one-woman Women's Coalition. She is a formidable force when made angry - being the only person to have scrapped with Red Hand Luke and come off better.

Ma and Da have never had the most romantic of relationships. Things soured on their honeymoon when Da, with the police looking for him to assist with their inquiries, whisked her away to a remote, freezing farmhouse just outside Dundalk. This set the scene for their life together and Da has been on the run from Ma ever since.

It was Ma who coined the phrase Give My Head Peace, referring to the sectarian strife within her own family. She has no time for the antics of Da or Uncle Andy, but if she wasn't married to Da and if Uncle Andy asked her out, Billy's mother-in-law would be his auntie!

Ma was born and reared on the Falls Road and still lives in Catholic west Belfast.
