Cal

Origins
Cal is a child of the Troubles. The only problem is he never grew up. Da, with tears in his eyes, tells the story of how Cal was once selected for a cross-community holiday to Florida but turned it down because he'd miss the internment night riots. Nowadays, Cal is still getting used to the idea that a bus is for getting you from A to B and not for putting across the road and torching it.
With this background you'd be wrong to think of Cal as a juvenile delinquent. From childhood to the present day he does everything his Da tells him to do. Very few fathers today can make that boast.

Politics
Whilst the last thirty years were pretty grim for most people, for Cal they were the 'wonder years'. But recent developments have left Cal feeling confused. In the good ol' days things were simple. Then it was 'Brits out!' now it's 'Brits kind of in but with cross border bodies and an equality agenda'. Try fitting that slogan onto a placard with poster paints. While Da slavishly accepts 'Gerry's analysis', Cal has the uncomfortable habit of dragging up the past and embarrassing Da with it. For example, 'But Da, didn't you used to say Gerry's friend, that nice Mr Hume, was leader of the Stoop Down Low Party?' or 'Da, what was Gerry getting at when he said "they haven't gone away, you know"? or 'Da, see the way you're an Assembly man, well whatever happened to "no return to Stormont"? It is for this reason that Cal hasn't progressed very far in Sinn Fein. He does, however, have one political ambition - to get a green metal ribbon.

Fashion
As a trendy kid on the block, Cal likes to hang out in his cool Hibernia gear - corduroy slacks, tweed sports jacket, waistcoat and Granda shirt set off by his green nylon ribbon. When not dressing to impress, he dresses University Challenge casual - Simpsons, South Park and Teletubbies T-shirts.
